"Can't my accountant help me with this?"

I hear this question at least once a week, and I completely understand the confusion.

After all, accountants work with numbers, I work with numbers - surely it's the same thing, right?

Not quite. And understanding the difference could be the key to finally getting the financial clarity and business growth you've been looking for.

This isn't about one being better than the other. You actually need both - just for very different reasons.

Let me explain.

What Does an Accountant Do?

Accountants are absolutely essential to your business. They're the professionals who:

  • Prepare your year-end accounts
  • Submit your tax returns (Self Assessment, Corporation Tax)
  • Ensure you're compliant with HMRC and Companies House
  • Advise on tax efficiency and business structure
  • Calculate how much tax you owe
  • Keep you on the right side of the law

Think of your accountant as your financial historian and compliance expert.

They're looking backwards at what's already happened, making sure it's all recorded correctly, and ensuring you're meeting your legal obligations.

They're brilliant at what they do, and you absolutely need them.

But here's what most accountants DON'T do (and aren't trained to do):

  • Help you understand what your numbers actually mean for day-to-day decisions
  • Show you how to use your numbers to grow your business
  • Teach you how to forecast and plan ahead
  • Help you figure out your pricing strategy
  • Work with you on cash flow management week-to-week
  • Support you in understanding which clients are actually profitable
  • Guide you through the mindset blocks around money
  • Ask you the questions you never even thought to ask

That's not a criticism - it's just not their job.

What Does a Business Finance Coach Do?

This is where someone like me comes in.

A business finance coach helps you understand and use your numbers to make better business decisions now and plan for the future.

I'm looking forward, not backward.

As one of my Money Metrics Academy members, Angela, put it during our recent call:

"My accountant doesn't do this with me. My accountant makes sure I pay the right tax. You're making sure my money works better for me."

Exactly.

Here's what I do with my clients:

  • Break down complex financial concepts into plain English
  • Help you understand the 6 Make or Break Numbers that actually drive your business forward
  • Show you how to price your services properly (and confidently)
  • Teach you to forecast so you can plan ahead instead of reacting
  • Work with you on cash flow so you're not constantly stressed about money
  • Help you understand which marketing activities are actually making you money
  • Support you in setting financial goals and creating a roadmap to get there
  • Address the mindset stuff that keeps you stuck (fear, shame, imposter syndrome around money)
  • Ask you the questions you never even thought to ask

I'm not preparing your tax return or ensuring compliance. That's your accountant's job, and they're far better qualified to do it than I am.

But I am helping you understand what those numbers mean, how to improve them, and how to use them to build the business (and life) you actually want.

The Questions You Never Thought to Ask

This came up on our Momentum Meeting call, and Mark said something that really stuck with me:

"You are actually asking the questions I never thought to ask. So it is the basics. No matter how long you've been in business - do you don’t know what you don’t know?"

Mark's been in business for 20 years. Twenty years.

And he'd never been asked:

  • What's the lifetime value of your clients?
  • How much does it cost you to acquire a new client?
  • Which of your services are actually profitable?
  • What's your turnover to staff ratio?
  • Do you know your breakeven point?
  • How many clients do you need to hit your income goal?

These aren't complicated questions. But nobody asks them.

Your accountant won't ask them because they're focused on compliance and tax.

Your bookkeeper won't ask them because they're focused on recording transactions.

But these are the questions that actually help you run your business, not just report on it.

The Translator Analogy

Gary, another member of Money Metrics Academy, described it perfectly:

"You're an accountant translator. You translate your accountant's stuff into simple things you can understand."

He went on to say:

"The whole time you sit down every year and go through the books with your accountant, they tell you stuff and you don't take it in because you're like, okay, I kind of get it... You know little bits pop up here and there and you learn a little bit more and a little bit more. But you're still sort of reliant on them."

Sound familiar?

Making Your Business Numbers Make Sense

Mark also said something else brilliant during our call:

"You're demystifying how to run a business. Making your business numbers as easy as A-B-C. Making it really accessible."

That's exactly it.

I ran an accountancy practice for 23 years. My old email signature at TI Accountancy was "Demystifying your business numbers."

But when I sold TI Accountancy and started Time Freedom Alchemist, I realized something: business owners don't need another accountant.

They need a translator.

Someone who can take the year-end accounts your accountant sends you and explain what they actually mean for your business decisions.

Someone who can help you understand if you're pricing correctly, if you can afford that new team member, or whether that marketing campaign was actually worth it.

A Real-World Example

Let me tell you about a client I worked with (not her real name, but the situation is real).

Sarah had a brilliant accountant. Her tax returns were always on time, her accounts were immaculate, and she was completely compliant.

But Sarah was working 60 hours a week, constantly stressed about money, and had no idea whether she was actually making a profit or just staying busy.

Her accountant would send her the year-end accounts, and Sarah would look at the bottom line and think "Oh, okay" without really understanding what any of it meant or how to use that information.

When Sarah came to me, we didn't replace her accountant - we worked alongside them.

Together, we:

  • Figured out her breakeven point (she was shocked to discover she needed to earn £8,500 a month just to cover costs)
  • Calculated the lifetime value of her clients (turned out her average client was worth £3,200 over two years)
  • Worked out her cost to acquire a new client (£180 through Facebook ads, £45 through referrals)
  • Restructured her pricing so she was actually profitable, not just busy
  • Created a cash flow forecast so she could plan for quiet months
  • Set up a simple system to track her numbers monthly instead of waiting for year-end

Six months later:

Sarah had reduced her hours to 45 a week, increased her profit by 40%, and actually understood what was happening in her business.

Her accountant was still doing the same brilliant job with compliance and tax. But now Sarah had the financial clarity and confidence to actually grow her business strategically.

When Do You Need Each One?

You need an accountant when:

✅ You're setting up your business structure

✅When you’re earning £75k-£2.5m+ turnover

✅ It's time for year-end accounts and tax returns

✅ You have VAT questions or returns to file

✅ You need advice on tax efficiency

✅ You're making big structural changes (like taking on a business partner)

✅ You need to ensure legal compliance

You need a business finance coach when:

✅ You don't understand what your numbers are telling you

✅ You're making decisions based on gut feeling rather than data

✅ You're constantly stressed about money but don't know why

✅ You want to increase your prices but don't know how to justify it

✅ You're working hard but not seeing the profit you expected

✅ You need help with cash flow planning and forecasting

✅ You want to understand which parts of your business are actually profitable

✅ You're ready to grow but don't know if you can afford it

✅ You've been in business for years but still feel embarrassed that you don't understand the basics

It's Not About How Long You've Been in Business

Mark made this point beautifully on our call:

"How long have I been in business? I started my first business 20 years ago. Did I know the difference between profit and loss and turnover? Yes. Did I know some of the other stuff? No. Because my business is not financial. My business is writing reports."

Exactly.

You're an expert in what you do - whether that's physiotherapy, graphic design, coaching, or running a gym.

You're not supposed to be a financial expert. That's not your job.

But you DO need to understand your numbers well enough to make good decisions.

And that's where I come in.

Can't Your Accountant Do Both?

Some accountants do offer business advisory services, and if you've found one who does this well, that's fantastic. Keep them.

But here's the reality:

  • Most accountants are incredibly busy during tax season
  • They're focused on compliance (because they have to be)
  • They're not trained in business coaching or mindset work
  • They don't offer the kind of ongoing support that helps you implement and stick with new systems
  • They charge £100-£200+ per hour for advisory work

Also, let's be honest - many business owners feel intimidated by their accountant.

You don't want to ask "stupid questions" or admit you don't understand something basic.

With a business finance coach, there are no stupid questions. My entire job is to help you understand, in plain English, without judgment.

The Pricing Reality

Let's talk numbers, because nobody else will.

Accountant costs:

  • Sole trader: £500-£2,000/year for basic compliance
  • Limited company: £1,000-£6,000/year for accounts and tax
  • Advisory services: £100-£200+ per hour (if they offer them)

Business Finance Coach costs (mine):

  • Money Metrics Academy: £49/month
  • Success by Numbers (1:1 coaching): From £295/month, 12-month programme

The difference:

Your accountant makes sure you're doing things right legally.

I make sure you're doing the right things for your business growth.

Working Together, Not Instead Of

The best scenario? Your accountant and your business finance coach work together.

I often liaise with my clients' accountants to make sure we're all on the same page.

They handle the compliance and tax efficiency. I handle the business growth and financial clarity.

It's not either/or - it's both/and.

Your accountant makes sure you're legal. I make sure you understand what's happening and how to use it to grow.

When You DON'T Need a Business Finance Coach

Let me be brutally honest here (proper "They Ask You Answer" style):

You don't need me if:

❌ You're in your first year and still figuring out your offer

❌ You're earning under £50k and just need to get the basics right first

❌ Your books are a complete mess (fix that with a bookkeeper first)

❌ You're not ready to invest in growth

❌ You just need compliance, not strategy

❌ You already understand your numbers and are confidently profitable

❌ You're not willing to implement what you learn

I'm not for everyone. And that's okay.

But if you're working hard, earning decent money, and still feeling confused or stressed about your finances - that's exactly who I help.

The Bottom Line

If you're waiting for your accountant to help you understand your business numbers, set your prices, plan your cash flow, or figure out your growth strategy, you're probably going to be waiting a long time.

Not because they don't care, but because that's not their role.

You need someone who can:

  • Translate the numbers into action
  • Help you plan ahead
  • Support you in building the confidence to make financial decisions
  • Ask the questions you never thought to ask

That's what a business finance coach does.

And if you're thinking "Yes, this is exactly what I need" - that's what we do in Money Metrics Academy.

We break down the numbers, create the clarity, and build the confidence so you can finally feel in control of your business finances.

Have you ever felt confused about the difference between these roles? Or wondered why your accountant wasn't helping with something you thought they should?
